Maps Gets Major Update With iOS 6

The current Maps application for iOS is already very useful, I actually use it to get directions and an estimate of how long to go from point A to point B, specially when travelling abroad.  Apple is now getting ready to upgrade the Maps application and will come out with iOS 6.

What will we see in the new Maps application?  Here are a some notable updates to the application:

Turn-by-turn navigation, with iOS 6, Maps will now feature spoken directions, a 3D view and real time traffic information.  I don't know if that will work here in the Philippines, but if it does then that would be really cool.  Another added function is that the screen in Maps will turn into a 3D perspective view of the road ahead, this is very similar to what we see in GPS devices.  Large on-screen arrows point exactly which direction to go.  Again, similar to a GPS, if you miss a turn, Maps will automatically re-compute and help you get back on the right track.

Traffic - with Traffic, Maps will give real-time traffic situations on the routes you select and automatically compute your estimated time of arrival based on the current situation.  Maps will even tell you the exact cause of the traffic and the current situation.  Again if this works here in the Philippines, this will help a lot and will let us know early if we need to find another route or not.

Flyover -  another feature which will be quite important for travelers.  The flyover feature will display interactive 3D views of major cities, a feature very similar to Google Earth.  You can also ask directions straight to Siri, and you will be given the exact directions on how to get to your destination in the fastest, most efficient route.
