These 10 Skills Will Make You Want to Have An Amazon Echo Dot in Your Home

I have been using my Amazon Echo Dot for about 6 months now and I am pretty happy with what it could do.

The Amazon Echo Dot is a hands-free, voice-controlled device that Amazon hopes would be the control center of everyone's Smart homes.  The Echo Dot is powered by Amazon's intelligent personal assistant, so you can just say "Alexa" and the Echo Dot will be waiting for your voice command.

The Echo Dot is capable of playing music, controlling smart home devices, make calls, send and receive messages, provide information like traffic, read the news, set alarms, read audio books from Audible, and a lot more.  The capabilities of the Echo Dot, which Amazon calls skills,  are ever expanding, and all you have to do is enable any new skill you want through the free Amazon Alexa App.

Although the Echo Dot is itself a speaker, music quality isn't the best.  The Echo Dot can connect to external speakers or headphones by Bluetooth or through a 3.5mm stereo cable.  With that, you can play music from Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, iHeart Radio and TuneIn.

The Amazon Echo Dot, already in its second version, retails for $49.99 from Amazon.

What are the top 10 skills of Alexa on the Echo Dot?

1. First Aid Skill - ask Alexa how to treat common problems, including severe bleeding, burns and seizures.

2. Control your air purifier - Alexa will be able to control Dyson's next generation air-purifiers.  With this skill you will be able to turn the air-purifier on and off at the same time switch between its 2 modes, fan or purifier.

3. Have words to a song stuck in your head but can’t remember the name of it? By singing or saying lines from the song, Alexa will find and play it. For example, just ask, “Alexa, play the song that goes, ‘I was doing just fine before I met you’” and Alexa will play, Closer by The Chainsmokers.

4. Control your TV.  If you have the latest Amazon Fire TV stick, you will be able to issue voice commands to the Fire TV stick's included remote.

5. Ask Alexa what time it is without looking at your clock or phone.

6. Set a timer for cooking.

7. Play music from Spotify.

8. Order an Uber.

9. Read the Bible.

10. Call or message other Amazon Echo users.
