Everything Galaxy Unpacked - Samsung Event

Samsung just concluded the "Everything Galaxy Unpacked" event and there were some pretty amazing announcements made.  It was a short but very interesting event.  Here are the highlights from the event.

The event was kicked off by Samsung saying that "Next is now" and that Samsung's philosophy is "Listening to you".

The first announcement was the revelation of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and according to Samsung, the Galaxy Note started the "Note" category, was the very first phone with this large screen.

Samsung highlighted the new S pen which comes with the Galaxy Note 5, the S pen is better than ever, more precise and sensitive.  They even showed a new feature of the Galaxy Note 5 where you can write on the screen even while the phone is locked and even without opening an app.  The Galaxy Note 5 is now constructed with metal and glass, now thinner and stronger but at the same time smaller and lighter than before.  The curved back makes it easier to hold with one hand.  A new feature which I am excited about is that the Galaxy Note 5 can now take a screen shot of a long list or picture and put everything on one page with having to scroll and take multiple pictures.  Another new feature or accessory is the physical keyboard attachment, it will need actual testing for us to be able to give feedback on whether this is actually usable or not.

Next announcement was the Samsung S6 Edge+ phone, now with dual edge display which adds a sense of depth specially when watching movies or just looking at pictures.  A new color, Silver Titanium has been added to the color options.  According to Samsung, the screen is larger but the phone is actually smaller.  Samsung called the S6 Edge+ an entertainment powerhouse.

The Samsung Note 5 and the Samsung S6 Edge+ will also have the following new features:

  • Live Broadcast - direct live broadcast from mobile phone to YouTube.
  • Apps Edge - allows quick access to the most frequently accessed applications.
  • Instead of the previous 2GB of internal memory, Samsung is loading these 2 new phones with 4GB LPDDR4 memory which will help make multi-tasking and graphics intensive applications run faster.
  • Support for LTE category 9, which is the future of mobile broadband.
  • 4K Video support with VDIS video stabilization.
  • Side sync - drag files from phone to PC to tablet and vice versa.  Also supports Macs.
  • Fast wireless charging, from empty to full battery in 2 hours.
The Samsung Note 5 and the Samsung S6 Edge+ will be available in stores on August 21 in the United States and Canada.  Pre-order already has started at the time of this writing.

Next up, Samsung took the covers off their Apple Pay competitor, Samsung Pay.

Key features of Samsung Pay are:

  • Universal availability, accepted virtually anywhere.
  • Support for store branded credit cards and membership cards.
  • Secured by Samsung Knox, a hardware based security system which protects Samsung pay from malware
