2 Days with iOS 7 on my iPhone 5
I was able to install iOS 7 ahead of the official scheduled release on Wednesday, here is a summary of what I liked and didn't like about Apple's latest release of its mobile operating system.
Installation had no major issues, I was able to setup iOS 7 using the restore function since I had the iOS 7 update on my local drive. Before I did the restore, I did a backup both on my Windows 8 PC and then to iCloud. Since iOS 7 isn't officially out yet, the current iTunes 11.0.5.5 for Windows won't be able to recognize the iPhone 5 running on iOS 7, thus the need for the iCloud backup. Apple still has to release the latest iTunes which will be compatible with iOS 7 devices. The restore took less than 10 minutes.
The only issue I had was that I couldn't find the iOS backup I did right before the restore, so I had to setup the iPhone 5 from scratch and then setup everything like I wanted and re-install all the apps I had before the restore.
After I got back all the settings and apps before I did the restore, it was now time to compare the iOS 7 performance with the previous iOS 6 I had on my iPhone 5.
There wasn't a noticeable change in speed, the iPhone 5 was still running normally and I think it's almost the same. The screens look really cool and and as expected, the icons are now larger and flat. The lock screen looks nice too:
Control center
One of the new and most talked about feature of iOS 7 is the control center which is accessible by swiping from the bottom of the screen upward:
From the control center, you can access basic functions like putting the phone in airplane mode, activating bluetooth, wifi, do not disturb mode and locking the phone. Screen brightness and music player are also accessible in the control center. AirDrop, which was initially available only in Macs, is now available for iOS devices, users can share files and photos directly with other users who have AirDrop. The flashlight is now a basic function, no need to download a separate app.
One noticeable characteristic of iOS7 is that the battery life has improved, I still have to observe this and hopefully it is true.
I tried running Real Racing 3 and the responsiveness is excellent, no change with this app.
Also, as announced in the Apple Special event, the iPhone 5 with iOS 7 has new ringtones and text tones, I like most of them, very good sounds.
