iPhone 5 is Out - What Came True from the Rumors
The iPhone 5 has been officially announced by Apple, my estimate of how accurate the rumors actually were is about 90%. Here are the rumors which came out to be true in the final product and what other features were not anticipated or talked about.
Larger retina display - This was one of the most talked about iPhone 5 rumors, and this one came true. The iPhone 5 now has a 4" Retina display capable of displaying a 1136-by-640 resolution. According to Apple, color saturation has also been improved by 44%.
Lightning connector - the rumor which most of us didn't want to come true but did. Apple has now replaced the old 30-pin connector with a smaller 9-pin connector Apple calls lightning connector. There are already a lot of accessories like phone chargers, photo saving connectors and interfaces which were built for the 30-pin connector so this change would definitely be a major revision and I'm sure accessory makers are now getting busy catching up their lightning compatible accessories with the iPhone 5 release.
Apple EarPods - there have been rumors coming close to the Apple event yesterday that Apple would be working on re-designing its earphones, actually, there were even leaked photos of how the Apple EarPods would look. Amazingly enough, the rumors on this were dead right, the actual EarPods are exactly the same as the rumored ones. Aside from the Apple EarPpods being more comfortable than ever and fitting so well in the ears even while running or doing active exercise, the acoustics have also been improved, according to Apple, the design is based on what people hear from speakers inside a room. The acoustics have been improved so much that they actually rival other high-end earphones which costs so much more.
LTE Wireless Connectivity - this was very much expected and even Globe Philippines was already giving out statements that they are already upgrading their infrastructure to be LTE capable. LTE is the latest and fastest connectivity standard. This will enable the iPhone to browse the internet and send and receive data even faster than our current DSL connections at home.
Apple A6 Processor - not too much talk about this but there were already hints since the next logical upgrade to the A5 chip on the iPhone 4S is of course the A6. The A6 chip was designed by Apple itself, according to Apple, the A6 can run applications up to twice faster than the A5 chip. Aside from improving processing speeds, the A6 processor improves graphics also by up to twice faster.
iOS 6 - this was a given, Apple already release a beta version of iOS 6 for developers to get their apps ready. Actually, most of the rumors on the iPhone 5 features were taken from code embedded in the iOS 6 beta. These were were developers got hints that the iPhone 5 might have the A6 chip, LTE connectivity, lightning connector and even what the resolution might be.
Facetime HD Camera - not too much rumors about this but it's a welcome feature. With this, Facetime calls will now be more crisp and clear than ever. What's even better now, is that you can use Facetime over a cellular connection, so no need to look for wi-fi hotspots to to get that video call going.
New Siri Features - Siri has learned a lot since her birth in the iPhone 4S, now in the iPhone 5, Siri is able to post in Facebook or tweet for you.
Nano Sim - we also saw this coming from leaked pictures of the iPhone 5 architecture, another clue was given out by Globe Telecoms when they announced that the new Nano Sim will be available this November in the Philippines.
Despite all the new features and increased processing power, the iPhone 5 still has a good battery life, up to 8 hours of browsing on a cellular connection, up to 8 hours of talk time, and up to 10 hours of video playback time.
The iPhone 5 will be ready for pre-order tomorrow, we will still wait for the Globe and Smart release dates here in the Philippines.
